Celebration of the Word and Communion Service

Among the many forms of celebration found in liturgical tradition when Mass is not possible, a celebration of the Word of God, especially when completed by a eucharistic communion, is highly recommended. The aim is that the riches of Sacred Scripture and of the Church’s prayer be provided “for the faithful should not be deprived of the readings that are read at Mass in the course of a year, nor of the prayers of the liturgical seasons.” (19, SC)

eucharist04In the absence of a priest, the faithful are encouraged to gather in prayer, in the ministry of the word, and with the giving of holy communion. There are many different forms these services can take, for example, a simple service or the readings and prayers for the day could be inserted into the traditional morning or evening prayer of the Church.

There should be no confusion between this service and a full eucharistic celebration. We come together, ”not to take away but to increase the desire of the faithful to take part in the celebration of the eucharist.” (22,  SC) In this way the communities involved will come to realize that they gather not “without a priest,” but rather “in the absence of a priest,” or, better still, an assembly “in expectation of a priest.” (27, SC)

Beginning in September we will offer a Celebration of the Word and Communion Service each Monday at 9:00 AM. Initially these services will be led by our diaconate candidates David Cavalier and Brent McLaren.

We are also interested in hearing from others in the parish who would might also like to lead these services. Please speak with Fr. Al if you are are interested in this ministry.
